IHSG Under Pressure: How FTSE's HSC Rule and MSCI Rebalancing are Shaking the Market

The Indonesian Composite Index (IHSG) has had a rough run lately, and if you were hoping for a quick rebound, the latest market analysis suggests we might need to buckle up for a bit more volatility. As we head into the upcoming trading week, several major headwinds are converging, making investors cautious about where the local benchmark is headed next.

It is not just one thing dragging the index down; rather, it is a perfect storm of domestic and international factors. Between an extended holiday break and significant shifts in global index compositions, the market is currently searching for a solid floor. Experts are keeping a close eye on two major catalysts: the MSCI index rebalancing and a critical move by FTSE Russell regarding stocks with high shareholding concentration.

The FTSE Factor and the HSC Concern

One of the biggest stories weighing on investor sentiment is the recent announcement from FTSE Russell. The global index provider is taking a harder stance on stocks categorized under High Shareholding Concentration (HSC). Starting in June, FTSE plans to remove companies that show a high concentration of ownership among a few entities, a move aimed at ensuring better liquidity and fair market representation.

Market analysts suggest that the IHSG has not yet fully 'priced in' the implications of this decision. This means the market might still react as the deadline approaches, leading to further sell-offs in affected names. When major global indices like FTSE or MSCI make these shifts, institutional funds—especially passive ones—are forced to adjust their portfolios, often leading to significant capital outflows from the affected stocks.

Technical Indicators Point Toward a Test of Support

From a technical perspective, the outlook remains cautious. Phintraco Sekuritas noted in their recent research that the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is showing a widening negative histogram. This is a classic signal that downward momentum is still building. Furthermore, the Stochastic RSI is currently moving toward the oversold territory, suggesting that while a bounce might happen eventually, the immediate pressure remains to the downside.

Based on these technical signals, there is a strong possibility that the IHSG will test the 6,700 to 6,650 level in the coming sessions. This zone is critical; if the index fails to hold these levels, we could see an even deeper correction as panic selling might take over.

Analyzing the Recent Performance and Selling Pressure

Adding to the conversation, MNC Sekuritas analyst Herditya Wicaksana highlighted that the recent 1.98% drop to the 6,723 level on Wednesday was largely dominated by heavy selling pressure. This wasn't just a minor blip; it was a clear indication that the bears are currently in control of the narrative.

In fact, over the span of just one week, the IHSG has corrected by a significant 3.53%. What is particularly concerning for some is the declining trading volume accompanying this move. While lower volume during a drop can sometimes mean the selling is exhausting itself, in this context—combined with the looming index rebalancing—it suggests a lack of buying interest to counteract the downward trend. As it stands, the market has already hit its minimum correction target of 6,727, but the momentum suggests there might be more room to fall before we see a definitive reversal.
