Indonesia is stepping into the spotlight once again as it prepares to host the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023 in the breathtaking landscape of Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. This isn't just another diplomatic gathering; it is a strategic move to solidify the region's position on the global map. Under the grand theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” Indonesia aims to prove that the association remains the heartbeat of regional stability and economic prosperity.
Decoding the Vision: Why ASEAN Matters
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, recently shed light on the deeper meaning behind this year’s theme. According to her, the concept is built upon two massive pillars. The first pillar, "ASEAN Matters," reflects Indonesia's ambition to ensure the organization stays relevant and impactful. It’s about making sure that the decisions made in high-level meeting rooms actually trickle down to benefit the people of Indonesia, the wider ASEAN community, and the world beyond.
Retno emphasized that under Indonesia's chairmanship, the goal is to keep ASEAN as a central player in global affairs. By staying relevant, ASEAN doesn't just survive; it leads. This vision ensures that the regional body remains a credible force that can navigate the complex geopolitical shifts of the 21st century.
ASEAN as the Epicentrum of Growth
The second pillar of the theme focuses on the economy. Historically, the ASEAN region has consistently outperformed many other parts of the world in terms of economic growth. By labeling the region an "Epicentrum of Growth," Indonesia is highlighting this momentum. The objective is to sustain this trajectory, ensuring that the Southeast Asian market remains a magnet for investment and a powerhouse of production and innovation.
Indonesia officially took over the ASEAN Chairmanship from Cambodia during the 41st Summit in November 2022. Since then, the government has been working tirelessly to ensure that the 42nd Summit in 2023 lives up to the high standards Indonesia has set in previous international events. This chairmanship is a testament to the world’s growing trust in Indonesia's leadership and its ability to host world-class gatherings.
Building the Digital Backbone
Behind the scenes of the diplomatic talks, a massive technological undertaking is underway. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has been tasked with ensuring that the digital infrastructure in Labuan Bajo is flawless. Communication is the lifeblood of any international summit, and the numbers are impressive: 1,635 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites are currently operational, supported by a staggering 3,773 kilometers of fiber optic cable network.

Indra Apriadi, Head of the Telecommunications Monitoring Center Team, noted that the Telkom Group has taken proactive steps to prepare for the peak dates of May 9–11. This includes significant upgrades to BTS towers to handle the surge in data traffic that comes with hosting thousands of delegates and journalists.
A Massive Media Operation
The Director General of Public Information and Communication at Kominfo, Usman Kansong, highlighted the scale of the media outreach. The government is targeting coverage from 300 to 500 media outlets, both domestic and international. To facilitate this, Kominfo is managing the official website, asean2023.id, and an online media registration system to ensure journalists have everything they need to report on the summit’s progress.
In this summit, Kominfo's role is three-fold: providing robust communication infrastructure, managing public relations and media, and steering the discussions regarding digitalization and the digital economy—a sector where ASEAN holds immense untapped potential.
Local Support and Economic Impact
While the national government handles the high-level logistics, the local community in West Manggarai is also gearing up. Vice Regent dr. Yulianus Weng has called upon the residents of Labuan Bajo to play their part in the summit’s success. He stressed that maintaining security, order, and cleanliness is not just a civic duty but an economic strategy.
According to Vice Regent Weng, when international guests and tourists feel comfortable and welcomed, the economic impact is immediate. He encouraged students, workers, and residents alike to practice the highest standards of hospitality. By showcasing the warmth and beauty of Labuan Bajo, the local community ensures that the legacy of the ASEAN Summit 2023 lives on long after the delegates have returned home.
