The landscape of Indonesia's digital infrastructure just witnessed a historic transformation. In a move that solidifies the nation's position on the global tech map, PLN Batam and DayOne have officially joined forces to develop what is set to become the largest data center in Indonesia. This strategic partnership isn't just a local milestone; it's a massive leap forward for the entire Southeast Asian digital ecosystem.

The project was formalized through the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PJBTL) with a staggering capacity of 511 MVA. To put that into perspective, this is currently the largest agreement ever signed in the Indonesian data center sector. The signing ceremony took place at Balairung Sari BP Batam on Friday, April 17, 2026, marking a pivotal moment for the city of Batam as it evolves into a primary destination for global digital investment.

Why Batam is Leading the Digital Race

Batam’s ascent as a digital hub isn't a stroke of luck. It is the result of meticulous planning and strategic positioning. Amsakar Achmad, the Head of BP Batam and Mayor of Batam, highlighted that the city’s readiness is built on three main pillars: robust infrastructure, streamlined regulations, and legal certainty. By integrating land availability with highly reliable energy supplies, Batam has created an investment climate that is hard for global investors to ignore.

According to Amsakar, the entry of this massive data center project is definitive proof that Batam is no longer just a supporting player; it is now ready to serve as a world-class digital hub. The collaboration demonstrates how local governance and industrial readiness can align to attract heavy-hitting international partners.

Powering the Hyperscale Future

For a data center of this magnitude, power isn't just a utility—it's the lifeblood of the entire operation. Kwin Fo, President Director of PLN Batam, emphasized that this partnership is a strategic commitment to providing sustainable and reliable energy. He noted that the synergy between PLN Batam, BP Batam, and international investors is crucial for fueling the growth of the digital economy.

Adding more technical weight to the announcement, Didi Apriadi, Commissioner of PLN Batam, explained that the 511 MVA capacity is equivalent to approximately 450 Megawatts (MW). This scale is specifically designed to support hyperscale data center operations, which require immense, uninterrupted power to manage the vast amounts of data generated by modern AI, cloud computing, and digital services.

A Greener Path: The 200 MWp Floating Solar Initiative

What makes this project truly forward-thinking is its commitment to sustainability. Alongside the power agreement, the partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of a 200 MWp floating solar power plant (PLTS Terapung). This initiative aims to transform Batam into one of the leading clean energy centers in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne, pointed out that Batam possesses a unique strategic advantage. Beyond its geographic location and infrastructure, the city benefits from being part of the SIJORI (Singapore, Johor, Batam) growth triangle. This cross-border data center ecosystem allows for seamless integration and collaboration across three nations, making Batam an indispensable link in the global supply chain.

With this massive investment, Batam is not only strengthening its economic foundation but also creating new high-tech jobs and boosting Indonesia's overall competitiveness. The collaboration between PLN Batam and DayOne serves as a blueprint for how infrastructure and innovation can come together to build a digital-first future.
