UNAND Partners with Guizhou to Revolutionize Agricultural AI and International Education
Universitas Andalas (UNAND) is making significant strides in its internationalization efforts. In a recent strategic meeting held at the Leadership Meeting Room in Padang on Tuesday, May 26th, UNAND officials sat down with representatives from Guizhou Vocational College of Economic and Business. This meeting wasn't just a formality; it was a deep dive into how two academic institutions can bridge the gap between traditional education and high-tech industrial needs.
Mapping Out the Four Pillars of Collaboration
The discussion between UNAND and Guizhou focused on four primary areas of cooperation that promise to provide immense value to students and faculty alike. These include credit earning programs, faculty and student exchanges, and the development of double or joint degree programs for the medium term. Furthermore, a major highlight was the planning of international internship programs, which would allow students to gain hands-on experience in a global setting.
This partnership is designed to be cross-disciplinary, directly involving four key faculties at UNAND: the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, the D3 Vocational Program of the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Information Technology. By involving these diverse fields, UNAND aims to create a holistic ecosystem where technology meets business and agriculture.
The Intersection of AI and Agriculture: The Guizhou Model
One of the most fascinating aspects of the meeting was Guizhou’s presentation of their advanced facilities. They currently operate a sprawling, modern tea laboratory where the development of tea products is no longer just a manual process. Instead, it is supported by sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This AI integration serves as a potential focal point for collaboration, ranging from general agricultural sector development to the creation of modern, tech-based farming tools.
Rector Efa Yonnedi, Ph.D., expressed a strong desire for UNAND students to participate in internships within this tea laboratory. The goal is simple yet ambitious: to allow students to learn and develop agricultural potential and technology simultaneously, ensuring they are ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Bridging the Language Gap and Supporting New Programs
Beyond technical skills, the meeting addressed cultural and linguistic barriers. Guizhou offered Mandarin language training for the entire UNAND academic community. This offer was warmly received by Rector Efa Yonnedi and the UNAND Language Unit. Currently, UNAND is in the process of planning a Chinese Literature Study Program, but the initiative has faced hurdles due to a shortage of native speakers. The Rector hopes that this collaboration will provide the necessary support, including native speaker resources, to finally bring the Chinese Literature program to life.
Modernizing the Curriculum with AI and Robotics
Mahdhivan Syafwan, the Director of Education and Learning at UNAND, pointed out a critical area for growth: curriculum exchange. He noted that Guizhou has been remarkably adaptive in implementing AI across various sectors, from agricultural technology to the deployment of modern agricultural robots. This level of AI integration is something UNAND is keen to adopt.

Interestingly, this push for AI aligns perfectly with current projects at UNAND’s Faculty of Engineering, where students and faculty are already developing unmanned drones. By exchanging curriculum and technical knowledge with Guizhou, UNAND hopes to accelerate its development of robotics and autonomous systems for the agricultural sector.
Looking Toward a Future-Ready Partnership
As the meeting drew to a close, Rector Efa Yonnedi voiced his optimism, hoping that this international partnership would be realized swiftly and effectively. Both parties are committed to ensuring that the outcomes of this collaboration align with their shared vision of academic excellence and technological innovation. With the groundwork laid, the path toward a more tech-integrated and internationally connected UNAND looks clearer than ever.
