Revolutionizing Rural Connectivity: How KKN 23 Transformed BUMDes Paprika’s Wi-Fi Business

In the heart of Jampit, Bondowoso, a digital transformation is quietly taking place. While we often think of internet innovation as something reserved for urban tech hubs, a group of dedicated students from the KKN 23 team—comprising M. Rosyid Iqbal Haqiqi, Deviatul Indah Pramadhani, Endang Pertiwi, Biramaya Harsi Maharani, Valentino Dimas Adi Nugroho, Malika Bulqis, Hafidya Salima, Dwiyen Aditya Prayogi, Wiwin Widyawati, Wardatul Jannah, Alfath Royan Santoso, and Christopher Leonardo Andikajaya—is proving that smart solutions can thrive anywhere. Their mission? To revitalize a struggling Wi-Fi business unit managed by BUMDes Paprika.

The Connectivity Gap in Jampit

Despite having a population of over 1,000 residents, BUMDes Paprika’s Wi-Fi service was severely underutilized. According to Agit, the Chairman of BUMDes Paprika, the service only had 20 active subscribers. This massive gap between potential and reality was largely attributed to a lack of effective promotion and a bottleneck in operations. Since Agit was managing the entire service single-handedly, the quality of service struggled to meet expectations. It was a classic case of a great resource suffering from a lack of visibility and management capacity.

A Brilliant Pivot: The Wi-Fi Corner Concept

Following a capacity-building session titled "Pengkapasitasan Pengurus dan Optimalisasi BUMDes dalam Merealisasikan PADes" on August 4, 2023, the KKN 23 team knew they had to act. During a late-night group discussion on August 7, Christopher Leonardo Andikajaya, a medical student with a keen eye for tech solutions, proposed a game-changer. He suggested moving away from a traditional home-subscription model toward a "Wi-Fi Corner" setup.

"We can create a centralized Wi-Fi Corner at Mr. Agit’s house," Christopher explained. "The concept is similar to an internet cafe or Telkom's public hotspots. We create time-limited vouchers. For now, the main thing we need is a professional login page for users to enter their voucher codes."

Designing a Professional Digital Experience

The idea was met with enthusiasm from the BUMDes leadership. To bring this to life, Deviatul Indah Pramadhani, a student from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, developed a functional prototype for the login page. This wasn't just a simple box; the prototype featured an intuitive UI with sections for features, pricing, help, and contact details.

The system was designed to be flexible, offering two main access methods: direct voucher entry and a member login (username/password). To ensure the service was affordable for the local youth—the primary target demographic—the team proposed a tiered pricing structure:

  • Hourly Vouchers: 1 hour for Rp 2,000, 2 hours for Rp 3,500, and 3 hours for Rp 5,000.
  • Member Packages: Designed for heavy users, these allow up to 5 devices per account. Prices range from 'Lite' (1 month/Rp 50,000) to 'Member+' (3 months/Rp 130,000) and 'VIP' (6 months/Rp 220,000).

The Technical Engine: Mikrotik Configuration

To turn this vision into reality, the team needed a specialized piece of hardware: a Mikrotik router. Fortunately, Agit already had one on hand, and he requested the students to handle the technical configuration. On Sunday, August 13, Deviatul took the lead in setting up the device.

The process involved connecting the router to a laptop, launching the Winbox application, and identifying the router's default MAC address. After logging in with administrative credentials, the team meticulously configured the interface to handle the voucher management system and the custom login page. This technical backbone is what allows BUMDes to automate access and manage bandwidth effectively.

Future Outlook and Community Impact

While the Mikrotik setup is complete, the project is currently awaiting final antenna repairs to ensure maximum coverage. Once fully operational, the Wi-Fi Corner is expected to become a hub for children and teenagers in Jampit, providing them with reliable internet for education and entertainment while encouraging their parents to adopt the service.

Ultimately, this isn't just about internet access; it’s about economics. The revenue generated from these vouchers and memberships will flow directly back into the BUMDes coffers, contributing to the Village Original Income (PADes). By bridging the digital divide, the KKN 23 students are helping Desa Jampit build a more sustainable and connected future.
