Tech with a Mission: How Hannah Gold is Crafting Digital Impact at the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute

When we think of summer internships, we often imagine students fetching coffee or filing papers. But for Hannah Gold ’26, a student at Bowdoin College, this past summer was about something far more transformative. Serving as a Web Development Intern for the Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute (OSWLI), Hannah took on the monumental task of bridging the gap between high-level technology and a deeply human mission: empowering the next generation of female leaders in Maine.

The Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute isn't just any nonprofit. It operates an evidence-based, three-year program designed specifically to build confidence, aspirations, and leadership skills in high school girls. At a time when young women are navigating pivotal developmental milestones, the Institute provides the resilience and tools they need to chase their most ambitious goals. For Hannah, this wasn't just a technical assignment—it was an opportunity to support a community that values the very leadership she exemplifies.

More Than Just Code: The Art of a Strategic Redesign

Hannah didn't just update a few images; she stepped into a leadership role to spearhead a complete redesign of the Institute’s website. This project was a cornerstone of the organization’s strategic plan. Her process began with a rigorous SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) of the existing digital platform. By identifying where the site excelled and where it fell short, she was able to draft a comprehensive creative brief that served as the roadmap for the entire overhaul.

Throughout the summer, Hannah’s daily tasks spanned the entire spectrum of digital strategy. She developed fresh content strategies, ensuring the Institute’s message resonated with its target audience. She also designed new pages from the ground up, keeping a sharp focus on accessibility, branding, and user experience (UX). It wasn't enough for the site to look good—it had to be inclusive and intuitive for everyone, from prospective students to long-term donors.

Optimizing for the Future

Technical execution is only half the battle; the other half is ensuring the right people see the work. Hannah dove deep into Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to increase the Institute's visibility. She spent hours editing graphics, refining content, and conducting usability testing with team members and program alumnae. This iterative process ensured the final product was polished and effective.

By modernizing the website, Hannah directly contributed to the Institute’s long-term sustainability. A professional, high-performing digital presence is crucial for donor outreach and maintaining the trust of the community. Her work ensures that OSWLI can continue its mission for years to come, supported by a digital infrastructure that matches the excellence of its programming.

The Intersection of STEM and Social Impact

For Hannah, the internship was a period of intense personal and professional growth. As a female student-athlete and an aspiring professional in STEM, she found herself at the perfect intersection of technology, business, and mission-driven work. She discovered that her passion lies in creative problem-solving where technical skills can yield a tangible social impact.

“My favorite part of the experience was knowing that my work will amplify the Institute’s mission of empowering young women across Maine,” Hannah reflected. The experience added vital tools to her professional kit, particularly in project management and digital execution, strengthening her confidence to lead complex projects from ideation to launch.

A Full-Circle Journey

Contributing to an organization that champions women's voices felt like a full-circle moment for Hannah. It reaffirmed her desire to pursue a career where technology isn't just an end in itself, but a powerful catalyst for innovation and positive social change. Her journey this summer serves as a powerful reminder that when we apply technical expertise to social causes, the results can be truly extraordinary.

This transformative internship was made possible through the Sabra and Richard B. Ladd Government Internship, provided by the Mellam Family Foundation, highlighting the importance of supporting young talent as they use their skills to give back to the community.
